DragonBall: Episode 009
(Originally aired 23 April 1986)

うさぎオヤブンの得意技
"Usagi Oyabun no Tokui Waza"
("The Rabbit Boss's Signature Technique")

Chapter 016 begins:
"Usagi no Mimi" / "Rabbit Ears"

Canon Segment: 16 Minutes, 20 Seconds

Continuing to head to the west, the gang now rides through a strange, unfamiliar land, with Yamcha and Pu'er not far behind. Oolong worries about their lack of fuel, but luckily, it isn't long before they reach a town. As they ride towards the gas station, they notice people running scared. Goku realizes that Bulma is the one scaring them. While he and Oolong wait at the gas station, Bulma heads off to go shopping. Along the way, she realizes that Goku was right, and assumes beautiful women must be rare around here. Meanwhile, when Oolong tells the station attendant that the one with the money will be back soon, but the attendant insists they do not need to pay anything. Bulma receives the same treatment at the Capsule shop, so she decides to go buy a new outfit with all that saved money.

Yamcha, watching the boys from the shadows, notes that the girl is gone. Elsewhere in town, two men with guns (also wearing rabbit ears) begin strolling through town. They complain about the town being boring and lacking nice women. Bulma has her new clothes now, which she finds at least slightly better than the "bunny girl" outfit she had. The salesman asks if she isn't a member of the Rabbit Gang, to which she responds, "What's that?" He then angrily throws her out of the store, telling her not to wear ambiguous hair accessories. As she heads back to the gas station, she notices no one is scared of her anymore, and wonders what the fuss about the bunny headband was. Yamcha notes her return, as Goku eagerly asks if she bought any food.

One of the Rabbit Gang men bites into an apple, which he says is awful, so he kicks over the rest of the apples. The other one threateningly asks a townsperson if he has any complaints. Soon after, he complains of a kid walking in front of him. The kid's mother tries to apologize, but the Rabbit Gang member tells her to shut up and kicks her. Goku and the others watch the fuss they cause, until the two men notice Bulma. They ask her to come hang out with them, and when she brushes them off, they realize she must not know of the Rabbit Gang. Now Bulma knows why the townsfolk were afraid of her before, and she tells the men she has no time to hang out with them. But one of them decides to pull a gun on her, so she casually tells Son-kun to beat up these guys.

Goku finishes his food and grins. With only a few strikes, he swiftly knocks both men out, and says how great it feels to have gotten to fight for the first time in a while. Bulma tells him he did well, as Yamcha smirks and says those fools were no match for Goku. However, one of the Rabbit Gang men is still conscious, so he pulls out a radio and contacts the boss, asking him to come to town. A man tells Bulma and the gang that they have caused something terrible, as townspeople begin running away...

Chapter 017 begins:
"Oyabun no Tokui Waza" / "The Boss's Signature Technique"

Everyone runs into their homes to hide, slamming their doors behind them. Oolong says he has a bad feeling about this, while Bulma thinks these people did not even thank them. The conscious Rabbit Gang man then wakes up the other, excitedly telling him the boss is on the way. Bulma overhears and asks what that is supposed to mean. The Rabbit Gang men grin and tell her she will be turned into a carrot and eaten. Oolong really wants to run away.

A bunny shaped car suddenly pulls up, and out comes a large, bipedal rabbit. His men run towards him excitedly, but he tells them to quiet down and point out the people that defied the Rabbit Gang. Oolong and Bulma thinks their boss looks really weak, though Yamcha has seen him somewhere before... The boss thinks it is pitiful they were beaten by children, and suddenly hops through the air over to them. He wants to shake hands with Bulma. Yamcha then remembers: it is the rabbit that turns people into carrots, and you must not touch him. Bulma graces the tip of his hand, and then pulls away and says she wouldn't shake hands with him. But the boss smirks, because they did touch, so Bulma suddenly turns into a carrot!

Yamcha realizes he was too late, telling Pu'er that touching that guy turns you into a carrot. The rabbit tells Goku that if he hits him, he will become a carrot, too. Oolong then gets the idea that Goku should use his to attack... but the boss threatens to eat Bulma if he does. Unable to do anything, Goku asks Oolong for another idea, but Oolong has already driven away. The boss tells his men to beat up the boy, now that he is unable to fight back.

Yamcha thinks that if those guys are done in, they will never get all the Dragon Balls, so he has no choice but to help Goku. He tells Pu'er to turn into a bird and steal the carrot. Yamcha climbs onto the roof of the gas station as Puer swoops down and snatches the carrot from the rabbit's hands. Yamcha then hops down and attacks the two henchmen beating on Goku. He tells Son to finish the boss with the Nyoibô, since he has taken the carrot. Goku gets excited to see Yamcha and asks why he is here, but Yamcha yells to just hurry and do it.

Filler Segment: 1 Minute, 45 Seconds

The boss begins hopping through the town chasing after Pu'er the bird, in the hopes of getting the carrot back. Yamcha tells Pu'er to bring him the carrot now, but before he can, Pu'er crashes into a tall mushroom. He begins falling to the ground, as does the carrot, which has fallen from his beak. The rabbit hops into the air after the falling carrot, while Yamcha and Goku do the same. As they get closer to it, Goku uses his to knock the carrot just out of the rabbit's reach, and they all come to the ground.

The odds appear to be in Goku's favor now that he has the carrot back, until the rabbit notices the fallen bird behind him. He threatens to turn Pu'er into a carrot now, leaving Goku unable to act again. Pu'er suddenly transforms into the spitting image of the rabbit, scaring the real one into thinking he will be a victim to his own magic!

Canon Segment: 2 Minutes, 24 Seconds

Goku then takes the opportunity to whack the rabbit over the head with his . He tells the rabbit he can live if he turns her back. The rabbit claps his hands together, and the carrot becomes Bulma again. Bulma wonders what happened, so Goku tells her that Yamcha and Pu'er helped, as he ties up the Rabbit Gang. She excitedly wants to know where Yamcha is, but Goku suddenly does not know, either. Yamcha is actually watching from the shadows again, since he would pass out if he got near the girl.

Goku wonders what to do with these guys now, and then gets an idea. He makes his extend REALLY high, and climbs up with the Rabbit Gang in tow. After a while, he slides back down the alone, telling Bulma that the rabbits are on the moon, where they are shown making bunny-shaped treats...

THIS AND THAT:

ALTERED SCENE:

Because of the filler scene, the way that Goku obtains the carrot differs between the anime and manga. In the manga, the sequence of events goes: Yamcha appears and tells Goku to attack, Goku whacks the rabbit over the head with the Nyoibô, Pu'er (as a cat again) floats over and hands Goku the carrot. In the anime, Yamcha appears and tells Goku to attack, the rabbit chases Pu'er around, Pu'er drops the carrot, the rabbit and Goku/Yamcha both jump for it, Goku lands with it and then whacks the rabbit over the head the same way he does in the manga.

MISSING SCENE:
The filler sequence near the end of the episode overwrites a panel of dialogue. In it, the rabbit says, "H-hold on!! I-I want to talk to you!! I-if you kill me, the girl that turned into a carrot won't be returned to normal!!"
MISCELLANEOUS:

Most of the dialogue before the title screen is unique to the anime, namely Bulma and Oolong's argument, and Yamcha blushing and drinking from the canteen. Also, the only two canon lines of Yamcha's at that point are actually said in reverse order in the anime.

Oolong runs away in both versions, but his return is only shown in the anime. It is quite obvious that they do meet up with him again at some point before Chapter 018 in the manga, however.

When Yamcha remembers who the rabbit is, in the anime, he says, "Omoidashita zo! Aitsu wa usagi da! Usagi da! Ninjinka da!" In the manga, he says, "Omoidashita zo!! Aitsu wa To!! To Ninjinka da!!" They both mean the same thing ("I remember! He's the rabbit! He's the rabbit that turns people into carrots!"), and "to" and "usagi" are actually both different readings of the same kanji (the one meaning "rabbit" that you see on all the Rabbit Gang members' clothing). This is fairly minor, of course, and probably only done because "usagi" is more recognizable verbally than "to", but I feel it's worth noting since Toninjinka is a name sometimes used to refer to this character. Note also that Yamcha refers to him as "Ninjinka" in the anime a couple times, while the corresponding manga dialogue uses no name.
