DragonBall Z: Episode 005
(Originally aired 24 May 1989)

"Gokû Shisu! Rasto Chansu wa Ichi-do Dake!"
("Goku Dies! There's Just One Last Chance!")

Chapter 203 begins:
Son Gokû Saigo no Shudan!!
"Son Goku's Last Chance!!"

Canon Segment: 11 minutes 33 seconds

As Gohan flies through the air (pulling off a mid-air somersault!) and easily lands on his feet just in front of the crater, Raditz and Piccolo both seem equally flabergasted. Goku gasps at Gohan to run, and Raditz can barely say a word as he notes Gohan's combat reading of 1307! "DON'T HURT... MY DADDY!!!!!" screams the half-Saiyan, as he propels himself in a crying rage directly towards Raditz, whilst seemingly engulfed in fire! Still too shocked to move, Raditz takes a head-butt square to the chest, and stumbles backward, his armor cracked! Raditz is able to regain himself just in time to avoid falling over, and spends a second gasping. Gohan, undamaged, climbs to his feet and walks over to his father. Goku can hardly believe what his son just did, but yells at him to run as Raditz approaches the pair! Raditz, seaming with rage, stumbles towards them, noting that Gohan's combat reading has dropped to 1. He realizes it changes with the child's emotions, and decides to put an end to this possible future threat right now. He raises his arm, and smacks Gohan a good few yards away, knocking him unconscious! Determined to finish him now, Raditz advances towards Gohan, as Goku begs him not to kill his son, as he's only a child. Raditz scoffs at this, saying that the child has more power than Goku! But he assures Kakarrot that he'll meet his son soon... in the afterlife.

With that, he stands over Gohan, and prepares to utterly massacre him, when Goku grabs Raditz from behind in a full-nelson! Shocked that "Kakarrot" had any strength left, Raditz is caught off-guard, and is unable to break free! Goku screams at Piccolo to hurry up and do his ultimate attack once more! Piccolo yells back that's he already building up his strength to do it, but he asks why Goku simply doesn't grab Raditz's tail again. Barely able to speak, Goku states that Raditz would cut off his own tail (somehow) if he had to, and Raditz is shocked that Goku knows about this. Raditz continues to struggle to break free of Goku's hold, and Goku yells at Piccolo to hurry! Raditz realizes that it was Gohan's blow that has made him so weakened, and he yells that if Goku doesn't let him go, they'll both die with Piccolo's attack! Goku smirks, and says that it'll be worth it. Raditz yells that he's insane, and Goku says that there's no other way to defeat him! Piccolo, smiling, says to himself that he won't hesitate to kill Goku with Raditz, as the death of his arch-rival has forever been his dream (he also mentions that it won't really matter anyway, since Goku's friends will bring him back with the Dragon Balls). Goku pleads with Piccolo to unleash the attack, as all of his ribs are broken and he can't hold him for much longer! Raditz pleads with Goku to let him go, saying that he'll leave this planet forever if he does! Goku smiles and says he won't be fooled twice. Meanwhile, Piccolo has finally gathered sufficent energy to unleash his attack again. "DO IT!!!!" screams Goku! "W- WAIT!!!!" yells Raditz! "MAKANKÔSAPPÔ!!!!" roars Piccolo, as his corkscrew beam blasts toward the Saiyan pair, gores directly through their chests, and bursts straight out their backs!!

Chapter 204 begins:
Sayônara Son Gokû
"Farewell, Son Goku"

The attack completes its objective, and Goku and Raditz seperate in mid-air, both with an equally large, gaping, bloody hole in the center of their chests. Raditz coughs up blood, and yells "D-... DAMN IT...!!!!" Goku gives a weak laugh, and hits the ground at the same time as his brother, a good distance away from him. Raditz, slowly spitting out words, can't believe that his awesome power has been defeated by two nobodies on a dustball of a planet. Piccolo walks toward him, gloating. Even in his defeat, Raditz acknowledges his brother's bravery; willing to die for the ones he loves. But Piccolo smirks at hearing this, saying that Goku's friends will use the powers of the Earth's "Dragon Balls", which can grant almost any wish. They'll be able to restore Goku to life as soon as they like. Raditz curses at hearing this, but also thanks Piccolo for the information, as he just transmitted the message to his two Saiyan partners in the depths of outer space. They know of his defeat now, and they'll be arriving within one year to wipe out all living creatures on Earth, and to use the Dragon Balls to restore Raditz (or so he believes!). Piccolo contemplates this fearfully (two stronger warriors in one year's time...), and Raditz informs them that their chance of winning will be even less in the next battle. Fed up with his arrogance, Piccolo raises his arm and finishes Raditz off!

Filler Segment: 1 minute 14 seconds

Back at the Son family home, Chi-Chi is sitting down, mending one of Goku's gis, saying that everyone must be having a great time at the Kame House. She wonders briefly if Gohan will be okay in such a different environment than usual, but she shrugs it off, and actually wishes that she had gone, too. Just then, she hears a familiar voice outside calling for Gohan, and happily realizes that her father has stopped by. Gyû-Maô gets out of his car, carrying a large amount of gifts for Gohan, as Chi-Chi greets him. He cheerfully greets her back, and asks where Gohan is as he enters the house (and gets stuck in the doorway!)

Near to the battlefield, Kuririn and the others are flying overhead in Bulma's jet. Bulma says they should be close to them by now, as Kuririn scans the ground for them.

Canon Segment: 6 minutes 50 seconds

Standing over the corpse, Piccolo lowers his arm, and sees Bulma's jet approaching them. Kuririn and the others finally spot them, seeing that the only fighter left standing is Piccolo. They wonder what exactly happened as they bring the jet in for a landing. Meanwhile, in deep space, the other two Saiyans (Nappa and Vegeta) are taking a rest on an alien planet, having just exterminated the inhabitants. Nappa states that Raditz is dead, after hearing the transmission. Vegeta says he doesn't care, and that Raditz deserved it for being killed by such weaklings. Nappa inquires on if they should go to Earth, and Vegeta believes they should (as he munches on an alien arm), mainly due to the presence of these "Dragon Balls". Nappa asks if they should bring Raditz back to life with these balls, and Vegeta says that immortality for themselves is a far greater wish, so they can be engaged in an eternity of combat! Nappa agrees, and they enter their spacepods and blast off for Earth. Communicating with each other via their scouters as they travel, Vegeta notes that Kakarrot's son had an abnormally high combat reading, considering his age. Nappa suggests it could've been a scouter malfunction, but Vegeta disagrees, saying that Raditz received far too much damage from the child. He continues, saying that a half-Saiyan, half-Earthling seems to be far greater in power than a regular Saiyan at birth. Nappa smirks, saying that if they spawn a race of these "Super Saiyans" themselves, another Saiyan empire would be born! Vegeta tells him that that idea is stupid: Why would they want children with greater powers than themselves? Nappa realizes his mistake, and Vegeta says that all life on Earth must be destroyed! Back at the battlegrounds, Goku's friends are gathered around him, and Kuririn is urging Goku to stay with them. Bulma tends to Gohan, saying that he's only been knocked out. Goku smiles, and says that that's good, because they won't get yelled at by Chi-Chi for letting her son die. Goku speaks to Kuririn, saying that he can relate to how lousy it feels to be dying. Kuririn tells him not to worry, because they'll use the Dragon Balls to bring him back to life right away! Goku thanks them, and then peacefully passes away. But no more than a few seconds later, his body vanishes completely! This confuses everyone but Piccolo, who believes it must have been Kami who did this, thinking him to have some plan for Goku in the afterlife. Back in space, Nappa and Vegeta prepare to enter suspended animation in their space pods for the next year. They are greatly looking forward to reaching Earth...

THIS AND THAT:

ALTERED SCENE:
In the manga, Vegeta and Nappa discuss the strength of Goku's son via their scouters as they're flying towards Earth in their spaceships. In the anime, it's changed to them discussing it while they're still on ground of the planet they just conquered, whilst facing each other.
MISSING SCENE:
n/a
MISCELLANEOUS:

Just before Piccolo unleashes the attack that kills the Saiyan pair, an anime-only combat reading of 1480 appears on Raditz's scouter (Raditz announces this, of course, as I can't read Saiyanese ^_^)

In a panel in the manga, Nappa is missing his scouter!

There are several panels in the manga where, after Gohan's blow to Raditz, the cracks in Raditz's armor are not present.
