DragonBall Z: Episode 002
(Originally aired 03 May 1989)

"Shijô Saikyô no Senshi wa Gokû no Ani Datta!"
("The Strongest Warrior in History is Goku's Older Brother!")

Chapter 196 begins:
Kakarotto
"Kakarrot"

Canon Segment: 8 minutes 52 seconds

After the title card, a shot of the Kame House is shown, and Bulma's aircraft lands on the tiny island. She pokes her head inside the door, and greets Kame-Sen'nin, Kuririn, and Sea Turtle. It's been five years since they've last seen her at the 23rd Tenka-ichi Budôkai, and they happily welcome her company. Bulma then presents the group with a box of manjû tea-cakes that she brought, but Kame-Sen'nin says the gift is unnecessary, since he would have been fine with simply fondling her breasts. After a rough smack on his head, the old man comments that Bulma, as always, has no sense of humor (and Bulma replies by saying that the old man, as always, is a pervert!).

A short scene of Goku and Gohan riding on Kinto-Un towards the Kame House is then shown, as Gohan gleefully looks at the nearby seagulls and flying fish as they zoom past them.

Back at the Kame House, Kuririn asks Bulma if Yamcha will be joining them today. Bulma immediately gets angry, saying that she and Yamcha are fighting, so she didn't inform him about the get-together. Kame-Sen'nin notes that she and Yamcha are getting along as well as they ever do. Bulma inquires as to where Lunch is, and Kuririn says that she left to be with Tenshinhan (or, at least try to be with him!) five years ago, and they haven't seen her since.

Raditz, still flying through the sky, notes that Kakarrot is moving at a high speed. Goku and Gohan are about to land, and Goku points out to his son that this would be the Muten Roshi's house. They hop off Kinto-Un, and yell "Hello!" Raditz sees that his target has stopped moving. Everyone comes out of the house to greet Goku, but then immediately ask who the kid is (Kuririn thinks Goku must be babysitting). Goku informs them that the child is his own, and everyone is equally shocked. Goku introduces his boy as Son Gohan, and Kame-Sen'nin realizes that he named him after Goku's late grandfather. After Bulma asks Gohan how old he is (Gohan holds up four fingers and says, "I'm four!"), she notices that Gohan has a tail! When questioned if Gohan has ever seen the full moon, Goku replies "No, we go to bed pretty early at our place." The group collectively breathes a sigh of relief.

Kuririn inquires as to whether Gohan is very strong, and Goku says that he has the potential, but Chi-Chi won't allow him to trian, saying that the world is at peace so martial arts are unnecessary. Kame-Sen'nin snickers at hearing this, saying that Chi-Chi has now become a very strict mother. Bulma finally points out the Four-Star Dragon Ball (Si Xing Qiu) on Gohan's hat, and Goku says that he wanted his grandpa's momento back, so he went on a Dragon Ball hunt for it.

He also says he found the Three-Star-Ball and Six-Star-Ball (San Xing Qiu and Liu Xing Qiu) in the process. Bulma mentions how the Dragon Balls bring back memories.

Suddenly, Goku feels a great, malicious power heading straight for them. Raditz descends directly in front of them, and he and Goku exchange head-on stares. Raditz finally breaks the silence, saying that Kakarrot has grown up, and looks just like his father. Everyone wonders what on Earth this stranger is talking about. Raditz continues, asking Goku if something has distracted him from his mission on this planet: to exterminate the human species. Kuririn steps up to him, kindly asking the "drunk" to leave the island. Goku screams at Kuririn to back away from him, but Raditz whips his tail across Kuririn's face, sending him smashing into the house! Goku readies an attack, but then freezes, realizing that this stranger has a tail, just as he used to!

Chapter 197 begins:
Son Gokû no Kako!!
"Son Goku's Past!!"

Goku and his friends can't believe this stranger also has a monkey-like tail. Raditz smirks, stating that Goku must realize who he is, now. Goku still insists that he doesn't know. Raditz becomes agitated, saying "There's no way you could've forgotten your mission, Kakarrot!" Goku says that his name is Son Goku, not that other weird name. Raditz gets angry, and screams at Goku to tell him if he ever badly damaged his head as a child. Goku admits it, and says he has a scar from the incident from a long time ago. Raditz curses him, but says that the blow to his head would explain things. Goku demands to be told what, exactly, it would explain! Kame-Sen'nin interrupts, saying that Goku's grandfather, Gohan, once told him that he found a foul-tempered baby (with a tail) in the woods. The baby was constantly angry, and wanted nothing to do with Gohan's love. But one day, the baby fell down a gorge, and severely damaged his head. The baby nearly died, but he eventually recovered, and was happy and carefree from that day forward.

Filler Segment: 52 seconds

As Kame-Sen'nin explains Goku's tragic head injury, a still-frame flashback is present, showing Grandpa Gohan discovering Goku in a space pod in the woods. Gohan reaches down and takes the baby as his own. Also present are scenes of Gohan trying to feed, bathe, and play with the baby, and in all scenes Goku is giving his foster grandfather a hard time. After the fall down the canyon, we see a cheerful Goku, joyfully spending time with his grandfather.

Canon Segment: 1 minute 50 seconds

Goku asks if that baby was him, and the old man nods his head. Goku then demands that Raditz tell him who he is, and what he wants. Raditz states that he will make Goku remember, as "his people" need him. Just then, Kuririn recovers from his blow, and staggers his way from the new hole in the house that he created. He warns Goku to be careful, that this guy is not quite human. Goku agrees, admitting that there is something he finds truly terrifying about him. Raditz finally decides to reveal everything: he tells Goku that he is not an Earthling! He is a Saiyan warrior, a member of the most powerful race in the universe! Stunning everyone further, he informs him that his name is Raditz, and that he is Goku's older brother! Goku immediately denies this, and Kuririn backs him up, saying that it doesn't make sense for Goku to be living on Earth ever since he was a baby if he's from another planet. Raditz says that the explanation to that is simple. Saiyans are basically "pirates-for-hire," as they travel from planet to planet, wiping out all inhabitants, to prepare them for sale to their future owners. Adult fighters are sent to planets with strong natives, but even as a baby, practice at combat is essential, so babies are sent to planets with weaker inhabitants. This was Goku's case.

Filler Segment: 32 seconds

As Raditz explains the evil deeds of the Saiyans, another anime-only flashback is shown to us. Clips are shown of Saiyans departing from planets to decimate other planets, preparing for battle, a battle scene (with the Saiyans in control, of course, blasting away and completely destroying the inhabitants of the planet), and a space pod being sent to Earth... with a baby Goku inside, all snuggled in and ready for his mission... to exterminate all life on Earth.

Canon Segment: 6 minutes 33 seconds

Kuririn states that if all of that is true, then even Piccolo is better than the Saiyans. Raditz adds on that it was fortunate that Earth has a moon, and Goku asks why that is. Raditz informs him that a true Saiyan's power comes to light when the moon is full. Goku doesn't understand (though Goku's friends do!), and it's here that Raditz notices that Goku's tail is missing. He demands to know what happened to it, and Goku says that it was removed a long time ago. Raditz grows even more angry, realizing that this is the reason why his own brother has been able to live peacefully on this planet of weaklings. Goku yells at him to shut up, and basically says that this is his planet, and he's proud of it. His friends back him up, yelling at him to leave, with Kuririn adding that Goku even saved this planet once. Raditz smirks, saying that it's impossible to "go back." The Saiyan homeworld, Vegeta, was struck by a large asteroid some time ago, and the entire race was wiped out. Apart from himself and Goku, only two others were away when the planet was destroyed. He then brings up the reason he came to find Goku in the first place: himself and the other two Saiyans have found a planet that will bring a high price once its inhabitants are wiped out, but said inhabitants are extremely powerful. Three Saiyans might even have trouble, but four should be enough to obtain an advantage! Raditz urges Goku to join up with them! He'd love the carnage and bloodshed of being able to fight strong opponents! Goku screams that he'd DIE before he ever did something like that.

Raditz, half-expecting that response, then directs his attention to the monkey-tailed child that Bulma is clutching. He asks if that is Goku's son. Goku screams out a "No!" but Raditz is convinced it is, due to the tail. Goku warns him to stay away from Gohan! But Raditz says he has no choice; if the father won't cooperate, he'll have to force the son to! He begins walking towards them. Goku screams at him again to stay away! Just then, Raditz lunges forward with unseen speed, and delivers a devastating blow with his knee to Goku's gut. Goku flies backward from the impact, landing a few feet back, groaning in pain. Goku's friends freeze, but Gohan breaks out of Bulma's grasp and begins running to his felled father. Raditz seizes the opportunity and nabs him before the child gets to his father. Gohan immediately begins crying, and Kuririn can't believe that Goku, of all people, has been incapacitated with one blow! Raditz then informs Goku to listen very closely to what he's about to say. If he wants his son back alive, 100 humans need to be killed within 24 hours, with the bodies piled right here on this island (as proof of Goku's "good" intentions!). He adds on that he hopes Goku will comply with this, as he'd hate to have to kill his only nephew!

As Goku talks to his friends about Gohan and his lack of training, there is a short filler scene of Gohan playing "janken" with a small crab on Sea Turtle's shell. Being able to only use "scissors", the crab loses, and promptly sprays bubbles over Gohan's face in a comical manner.
