DragonBall Z: Episode 008
(Originally aired 21 May 1986)

悟空の大変身
"Gokû no Daihenshin"
("A Wish to Shenlong")

Chapter 022 Begins:
"Gokû no Daihenshin" / "Goku's Great Transformation"

Filler Segment: 4 minutes, 35 seconds

In the darkness of night at the wasteland, various wildlife is in activity. Animals screech in the distance, bat and snakes flap and slither about, and a pack of coyotes polish-off a recent kill. At the top of the rock structure, Gohan is curled-up sleeping, dreamingly asking for his mother.

At the Son Family home, Chi-Chi is beyond a little annoyed with the absence of her husband and son. As she washes dishes by hand, she shatters almost every one of them accidentally from frustration! She angrily shouts to herself about how irresponsible Goku can be as a father, and how Gohan should be back home by now, studying. She continues, as she puts the surviving dishes away, saying how no one at the Kame House is a good role model, and how Goku should know that this will be a bad influence on Gohan. She sits down and concludes her thoughts with Gohan not having a good future if this keeps up...

At the other end of the house, Kuririn is sharing a room with Gyû-Maô (fast asleep) for the night. But Kuririn is wide awake, sitting atop his bed, (now dressed in his orange gi). He thinks to himself about how frustrating it is to not be able to talk about Goku's death, and decides to head back to Kame House, quietly. As he tip-toes out, Gyû-Maô calls out Goku's name, and Kuririn freezes! Gyû-Maô urges Goku to eat more, and Kuririn realizes that's he's sleep-talking. As he drives away from the house, he looks up and apologizes to Goku, saying that such news is not easy to break.

It's morning at the wasteland, and the bright sunlight wakes Gohan up. He sits up and looks around lazily, until he remembers where he is and screams in fear! Piccolo, floating nearby, says to himself that if he's hungry, he should climb down and find food already!

At the Kame House, Bulma scorns Kuririn for not telling the news of Goku's death to his family. She calls him a coward, and Kuririn says that he can't fairly be called that, considering Chi-Chi is involved! Kame-Sen'nin understands, and says that he'll write Chi-Chi a letter regarding the details. Kuririn joyfully supports this idea, and Bulma asks if Kuririn at least got the two Dragon Balls from Goku's house. Kuririn, with a dumbfounded look on his face, stammers that he completely forgot about that! Bulma calls him useless, and Kuririn looks down sheepishly.

Chapter 022 Begins:
"(JP TITLE)" / "One Year for Each Respective Group"

Canon Segment: 6 minutes, 15 seconds

In another large wasteland, a jet-car is shown speeding across the landscape, going extremely fast. Its driver is a furious Chi-Chi, with Gyû-Maô in tow! Gyû-Maô tries to tell Chi-Chi to calm down, but she's too upset with Goku to listen. She told them to be back before dark, but Gyû-Maô says that there was probably so much catching up to do with his friends that they lost track of time. Chi-Chi responds by saying that their son cannot afford to miss one day of school, as success is dependant on knowledge in today's competitive world!

At the Kame House, Bulma is adding the finishing touches on the all-nighter she pulled in repairing Raditz' scouter. She exclaims "I did it!" when the screen lights up, but is greeted with nothing more than snores from her friends. One machine gun-firing later, everyone is wide awake! Bulma tells Kame-Sen'nin to get up, so she can measure his strength reading. She informs them that she was able to switch the scouter's system to the Earthly numeric system, and the "Turtle geezer" clocks in at 139! Kame-Sen'nin is impressed with himself, but is curious as to just how the device figures it out. Leaping up, Kuririn asks Bulma to read him next! Scanning him, he pulls off a 206 reading, and Kuririn laughs about how he could beat up his former master!

Just then, a loud voice calls out from outside the house. Kuririn opens the door, to reveal Yajirobe standing there. After stating that the location of this house is stupid, Yajirobe informs Kuririn that he, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu should all report to Karin's Tower immediately so they can all head to Kami-Sama's palace for training against the Saiyans. Kuririn, completely taken aback by this, stammers out a response, saying that'll he'll round up everybody and get there quickly! Yajirobe says that he's done what he was supposed to do, and begins walking back to his air-car. He stops just before he reaches it, and turns back to face the crew, adding that they should not wish Goku back to life for one year. Bulma inquires as to why, and Yajirobe says it's because he's training in the afterlife, and if they want more details they should contact Uranai Baba. He then speeds off into the distance. Everyone is quite perplexed by the abruptness of what just happened, but they immediately forget about that when they see Chi-Chi and Gyû-Maô in the distance, approaching the island at top speed in their air-car! Upon arriving, Gyû-Maô jumps out of the car with glee, and throws himself before Kame-Sen'nin, stating how good it is to finally see him again! Kuririn and Bulma tremble in the background as Chi-Chi approaches Kame-Sen'nin, demanding to know where Goku and Gohan are hiding! With a nervous smile on his face, Kame-Sen'nin informs them that Gohan has been kidnapped by Piccolo. When the flabbergasted pair asks where Goku is, Kame-Sen'nin sheepishly replies "He's dead!". Chi-Chi promptly faints.

Chapter 209 continues into and concludes in episode 11

Filler Segment: 2 minutes, 23 seconds

Evening is approaching the wasteland, and a large stampede of triceratops suddenly go rushing by. Gohan calls out to them for help from atop his cliff, but they continue on their course. More disappointed than ever, he sniffles to himself for his mom and dad about how he can't get down.

On the Serpent Road, Goku is still running!

Night has again taken the wasteland, and Gohan awakens to see a small chipmunk trying to take one of his apple cores. Gohan sits up and greets him with a smile, but the chipmunk is frightened, and runs into a small hole in a rock's side for safety. Gohan picks up the apple core and reaches his hand into the hole, telling the chipmunk that he can have it, but he gets his finger bitten, and the chipmunk races out of the hole, and nimbly jumps down from level to level on the rock structure until he reaches bottom. Gohan is envious about how easily the chipmunk got down, as he longs to set foot on ground level again himself.

Chapter 208 begins:
"(JP TITLE)" / "An Occurrence by the Full Moon"

Canon Segment: 1 Minute, 21 Seconds

Later in the night, Gohan is again curled-up atop the rock structure, sleeping. He slowly awakens, rises to his feet, and urinates over the side of the cliff. He examines his situation again, still without a clue on how to get down from here. Suddenly, he notices that he's bathed in light, but doesn't understand why with it being night. He turns around and views the full moon, in all it's majesty! Gohan is surprised and delighted, having never seen the full moon before, but he pauses in mid-sentence. Staring straight at the moon, his eyes adopt a glassy look, and his heart starts beating faster and louder. Piccolo, floating nearby for some time now, stirs, wondering what's happening. Letting out a loud roar, Gohan transforms into an Ozauro! The rock structure is no more, easily giving way to Gohan's massive weight. Piccolo screams "What the hell?!!" as Gohan lands on the ground and finishes off the rock structure with a mighty smash of his fist. Gohan then begins mouth-blasting everything around him, causing Piccolo to become absolutely dumbfounded as to what's going on (as he dodges Gohan's ki attacks!) He says that the Earth will be destroyed before the Saiyans arrive, at this rate! But then, he recalls Raditz mentioning a Saiyan's true power coming to fruition in the light of the full moon! He spins around and realizes the moon is the problem! With a mighty, one-handed ki blast, Piccolo blasts the small star to smithereens, restoring Gohan to his tiny, naked self. The child immediately passes out, lying on the ground.

Piccolo, breathing heavily, lands next to him, still blown away by what just happened. He says that he seems to have found the reason behind Goku and Gohan's strength, and shudders to think what would've happened if the coming Saiyans had used the moon to transform. After consideration, Piccolo decides to remove Gohan's tail (with it being the weak point of the Saiyans, after all). After doing so, he dons Gohan with an outfit and sword, and tells the unconscious half-Saiyan that he has training of his own to complete. If Gohan is alive in six months, he will train him personally (to the point where Gohan will wish he was dead, says Piccolo with a smug grin on his face). He flies away as Gohan continues sleeping. On Serpent Road, Goku is taking a nap himself.

Chapter 208 Ends

Total canon time: 11 Minutes, 55 Seconds
Total filler time: 6 Minutes, 58 Seconds

DB Episode 013: ~50% Filler

THIS AND THAT:

Chapter 208 marks Gohan's first transformation into an Ôzaru.

Chapter 209 marks Gyû-Maô's first appearence in the manga in a long time! He last appeared in chapter 15 (in the days when he was more violent, and wore a battle uniform)!

ALTERED SCENE:

In the manga, Chi-Chi and Gyû-Maô are in their air-car over the ocean when discussing Goku and Gohan. In the anime, they are travelling over a wasteland.

MISSING SCENE:

For reasons unknown (possibly time constraints), the anime does not adapt the short scene of Kuririn, Bulma, and Kame-Sen'nin talking about finding the others via use of the scouter. This scene is never present in another episode, either; we simply see the group in future episodes travelling around and recuiting everyone. Here's how it went in the manga:

Right after scanning Kuririn, Bulma mentions that the scouter is able to track down high strength readings from all over the planet. Turning herself about, Bulma finds readings of 250, 177, and 329 around the globe (the group predicts that the numbers belong to Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Piccolo, respectively). They assume that Gohan is still with Piccolo, and Kuririn nervously asks if they should try saving him. Kame-Sen'nin says he would like to, but Piccolo probably truly does mean to train him to help protect the Earth. Besides, with such a difference in strength readings, Piccolo would slaughter them even if they did try to rescue Gohan. Bulma then says that since the scouter will make finding the others so easy, they'll all be able to split up and find the other Dragon Balls in no time, and that Goku will be brought back to life soon.

It is then that they are interrupted by Yajirobe.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Things really got mixed around in this episode! In the manga, chapter 209 jumps six months into the future near the end of that chapter (specifically, the last 4 1/2 pages of chapter 209 take place six months after Chi-Chi faints). These 4 1/2 pages involve: a panel of everyone training at Kami-sama's, a panel of Goku (still) running down Serpent Road, and then the remainder of the chapter involves Gohan (which is later presented in episode 11), completely adapted to life in the wild. Toei simply didn't want the anime to also jump six months into the future at that point because they didn't want to get caught up to Toriyama, who was still drawing these chapters at the time. As a result, nearly ten episodes worth of "glorious" (and almost 100%) filler were created to stretch things out during the six month gap.

The final item regarding this matter is then, "Why did Chapter 208 take place after 209 in the anime?" My theory is that this was done to end the episode on a more dramatic note. Specifically, Piccolo (with that devilish look on his face) informing his pupil's sleeping body that training with him will be a slice of hell... verses Chi-Chi fainting ^_^.

In the anime, there is a short filler scene of Chi-Chi accelerating her air-car to an insane speed through the wasteland (just after she and her father finish talking), and Gyû-Maô is almost thrown clear in the process!

In the anime, Kame-Sen'nin questions if the scouter is truly working properly after Bulma reveals Kuririn's strength reading. A quick scan of Sea Turtle (with a strength of 0.001) diminishes any doubts about malfunction.

Finally, in the anime, when Chi-Chi is speeding towards the island and the group is watching her, Kuririn frantically asks Kame-Sen'nin what they should do! Kame-Sen'nin's only response is "...I haven't written the letter yet..."
