Response to 'A Petition Is Not Going To Save DBZ'

First
of all, let me applaud Jon Allen for addressing this issue,
and for bringing up some valid points. However, allow me
to also state my opinions seeing as I was one of the people
to sign this petition before it got anywhere near its now
1500 some odd signatures as I last checked.
Let me go ahead and address one issue right away: Do I believe
the petition will work? Simple answer: No. There are too
many demands. I am not blind, and can see that the petition
is ridiculous. Redubbing an entire season worth of shows
which have brought about a huge increase in popularity among
the mainstream populous of America, as well as made Gen
'more money than he knows what to do with' is hardly a demand
which FUNi will take seriously. While it would be nice to
see the season redone with original music and a faithful
translation, I will shed a silent tear for the atrocities
done to the villain known as Freezer and watch my blurry
fansubs, as well as the DVD's I suppose.
My
only hope is that FUNi will notice that fans truly do care
about this show and that some changes must be made. Perhaps
they already have to an extent, but maybe they will make
more of an effort. Perhaps they will watch some of the original
episodes and see how the characters voices masterfully fit
the scenes, or perhaps Gen will finally push to get the
original music in the dub before the entire series is over.
Now I realize you say that FUNi is already taking steps
to improve the dub, and I am not blind to them. The voices
are slowly getting better, and the dialogue is getting *closer*
to the original. However, I simply feel that when we make
some progress, something else comes along and smacks the
DBZ fans down as if to say "Ha, fooled you."
My
latest example: #16's dubbbed voice. Again, FUNi is trying
to go for the robotic, monotone voice and stress that #16
is an android. Never mind the fact that Dr. Gero was a genius
that created incredibly life-like machines, they must sound
like something out of a 1980's sci-fi flick or an order
taker at a Jack-in-the-box fast food joint. But, I'm straying
away from the point so allow me to conclude.
As
a fan of Dragonball Z, I simply want in whatever ways possible
to make my voice heard. The petition to me is not something
that ever has a chance of being fulfilled, but is rather
a way to show FUNi that fans do care about the show. It
is not meant to be insulting, and if I had a way I would
apologize in person to Chris, Sean, Sonny, and the others
who might have taken offense. The people from FUNi, while
I have not had the pleasure of meeting them, seem like great
guys. However, my best friend is also a great guy, but would
I hire him to voice Son Gokou? No. The voices, however,
are something I have pretty much given up on. If Ocean Group
somehow by the grace of god made a return; it'd make me
the happiest DBZ fan in the world. But, I am willing to
face facts. It ain't gonna happen. So, I've pretty much
set what I believe are two *attainable* goals for the series
(I just pray that they occur before Son Gohan's SSJ2 transformation)...
1
Fire the script writers and hire a translator (geez, can't
they just do this now have Daimao do the translation for
the dub as well?), and
2.
Scrap the horrible synthesizer muzak they are using now
and work towards getting the original score from the Japanese
series.
If
these two things were done, the dub would be infinitely
better. I could live with the voice talent if only the story
was intact along with the original score. Anyway, I simply
wanted to give a reply to the editorial Jon has written,
and to show you guys that everyone who signed the petition
was not a bloodthirsty, rabid, nonsensical fan. Some of
us are just dreamers, who dream of a better future for DBZ.
Thank you for your time...
