Video
game music is a big thing in Japan; nearly ever game gets
at least one CD released. Some, however, get either an
original soundtrack, and/or an arranged soundtrack released.
An original soundtrack will have the music exactly
as heard in the game; if it's an 8-bit game, you'll hear
8-bit music on the original soundtrack. If it's an arranged
soundtrack, it means the music has been re-done to take
full advantage of the digital format... sometimes it's
even performed by an orchestra! Nearly all DragonBall
game soundtracks are arranged (although since the Budokai
games come with music that's "arranged" already, this
isn't exactly the case).
The
original Japanese title is written in blue,
and underneath it in red
is the English translation (where appilcable). Underneath
that in the smaller font is the artist, where it is known.

Now,
I'm not a huge "techno" fan, but
I find myself oddly enjoying this CD to its
fullest extent. One thing that those of you
with musical ears will notice is that each
individual character's theme actually has
the same kind of base rhythm to it, which
is then expanded upon by an individual melody.
It's something quite interesting, and allows
each one to be distinct, yet flow into each
other well. There's a really nice deal of
character voice sampling, as well (Freeza's
is especially fun). I can't really pick any
specific track I like the most, because they're
actually all very good. I highly suggest checking
out this disc. With all the character voices,
it will probably appeal to you even if you
haven't played the game before.

This
is definitely a CD you need to purchase. Even
if you haven't played the game, the songs
are just so wonderful, you'll fall in love
with them immediately (and if you *have* played
the game, they'll mean all that more to you).
While
Zangya's and Bojack's themes leave much to
be desired, the other eight tracks more than
make up for it. The "Main Theme"
is the song heard upon starting up the game,
as Gohan flies towards Kami-sama's
palace. Vegeta's theme is a funky-techno type
track. Son Gohan's theme is a very long piano
solo, and is quite stunning. Piccolo's theme
has some nice hints to the "James Bond"theme.
Cell's theme is a complete and utter rip-off
of Pink Floyd's "One of These Days,"
but is also wonderful :P. Trunks' theme is
probably the star of the disc; it starts out
with a nice piano intro, and soon moves into
a full, hyper theme. Both suites are performed
by an orchestra. God, buy this disc. |

This
disc I'm not so sure on how I lean. There's
a cool remix of Trunks' Super Butoden theme,
and the Tenka-ichi Budôkai
theme is really nice, but beyond that.. I'm
not sure. If you enjoy the game, by all means,
pick up the CD. If you enjoyed the first two
Butôden soundtracks, you might
want to look into this one, even though it
seems to head in a different musical direction.
Perhaps only as a curiosity may you look into
it... |

Well...
the CD cover image seems to share that with
Super Gokû Den 2, but a brief
look at the (Japanese) track listing on the
back lets us know that it's not quite the
soundtrack for that game... it's that and
much more.
As
for the music on it... damn, it's very good.
It actually appears to be a mixture of music
from some of the Super Famicom and Sony PlayStation
games. Track 3 has some revisions of some
fun tunes later used in Final Bout,
first making appearances in the 16-bit games.
Some appear to be directly off of some other
soundtracks (Hyper Dimension OST?).
Track 19 is simply Kuko and Kageyama Hironobu
conversing with each other, which leads into
the final (20th) track, a karaoke version
of a duet between the two.
One
of the highlight tracks, of course, is the
full-length vocal version of "Hikari
no WILLPOWER", Future Trunks' theme
from all of the 32-bit video games. |

I
finally got my hand on a copy of this CD,
and wish I hadn't. The "OVA" (rather,
video game footage spliced together to appear
like
an OVA, if you've actually got it on video)
isn't all that good, to begin with, and the
music is just as bad. It's completely different
from what you hear in the TV series; it seems
to all be electronically synthesized. It's
just not good stuff. If you're going to buy
it, make sure you sell it to some dope that
doesn't know any better on eBay for more than
YOU paid for it.
