Daizenshuu EX - Multimedia - Music Directory - Hit Song Collection CDs

The DBZ "Hit Song Collection" CDs are an odd breed. There are 20 of them, total, including the two remix CDs. The "Hit Song Collection" CDs are comprised of opening and ending themes to the TV series, movie ending themes, TV episode insert songs, and (mostly) what are referred to as "image songs."

What is an image song? Easy! Perhaps you've seen CDs in your local CD store saying something along the lines of "Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture..." blah blah blah. Think of the "Hit Song Collection" CDs and their image songs like this. Some songs will be right from the series, but most of them are songs that were recorded specifically for these CDs, and never had anything directly to do with the show. Almost all of them are sung by the regular artists (Hironobu Kageyama, KÛKO, Ammy, etc.), and are fun listens.

The original Japanese title is written in blue, and underneath it in red is the English translation (where appilcable). Underneath that in the smaller font is the artist.

Obviously a harder to find DBZ Hit Song CD, the first one is actually a pretty nice addition to the set. The first opening and ending themes to the DBZ TV series are represented ("CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" repectively), along with Gohan's drunken song from the first DBZ movie ("Tenka-ichi Gohan"). "Aitsu wa Son Gokû" is a fun song by Kageyama praising everything about Goku. "Moero! Dragon Sorujâzu" is just a catchy tune that you'll enjoy.

Important tracks:
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" -- DBZ 1st opening theme
- "Shura-Iro no Senshi" -- DBZ Episode 20 insert song
- "Tenka-ichi Gohan" -- DBZ Movie 1 insert song

Review - VegettoEX

Just an average DBZ Hit Song CD. All but the ending theme are performed by Hironobu Kageyama (and all of those but the opening are performed with Broadway), so unless you're a huge fan of his, you wouldn't have a problem skipping over this particular disc. There's a good mixture of up-tempo and slower songs, though. All (with the exception of the opening and closing themes) are image songs. Again, just an average release.

Important tracks:
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" -- DBZ 1st opening theme
- "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" -- DBZ 1st closing theme

This is easily one of the best DBZ Hit Song Collection CDs that was ever made. As if having the closing theme and one movie song wasn't enough (like many other Hit CDs), we're treated to a gazillion other fun songs! The "Hikari no Tabi" overture opens up the CD, and moves right into an incredible remix of the opening theme to the original DragonBall TV series, "Makafushigi Adventure!" "Happy Birthday" is a fun, slower-paced image song by KÛKO (it makes no sense in any kind of DBZ context, really, but it's still fun, none-the-less!). The "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" remix is another excellent addition. Same goes for the "Marugoto" remix. The song that the CD is named for, "Hikari no Tabi," is the closing theme to the Bardock special (in Japanese), and it's an absolutely beautiful duet between Hironobu Kageyama and KÛKO. If you see this CD in any store or on eBay, don't hesitate to grab it.

Important tracks:
- "Makafushigi Adventure! (New Remix Long Version)" -- Remix of DragonBall opening theme
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA (Space Version)" -- Remix of DBZ 1st opening theme
- "Marugoto (New Remix Long Version)" -- Remix of DBZ Movie 3 closing theme
- "Hikari no Tabi" -- DBZ TV Special 1 closing theme
- "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" -- DBZ 1st closing theme

Review - VegettoEX

Definitely another one of the better DBZ Hit Song Collection CDs. The obvious "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" are present, with a couple other non-image songs. The closing theme to DBZ movie 4 ("'Ya' na Koto ni wa Genki-Dama!!") is a fun tune that includes chanting of various special techniques. "Battle Points Unlimited" is the groovy BGM played during Future Trunks' battle with Freeza and King Cold in episode 120. "Kuchibue no Kimochi" is Gohan's fun whistling tune (now with vocals!) from DBZ movie 4. KÛKO gets herself some air time with a few image songs, the best of which probably being "Yume no Kakera." If you can find this one, check it out.

Important tracks:
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" -- DBZ 1st opening theme
- "'Ya' na Koto ni wa Genki-Dama!!" -- DBZ movie 4 closing theme
- "Battle Points Unlimited" -- DBZ episode 120 BGM; Future Trunks vs. Freeza
- "Kuchibue no Kimochi" -- DBZ movie 4 insert song; Gohan's whistling tune
- "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" -- DBZ 1st closing theme

Review - VegettoEX

A very strange DBZ Hit Song Collection CD, in that it contains a lot of instrumental-only tracks. However, none of these tracks appeared in the show, so I guess you can consider them image songs. "Tobikkiri no Saikyô tai Saikyô" is the ending theme to the 5th DBZ movie, and is a fun tune. Other than that, everything else is image stuffage. KÛKO's "Power of Smile" is a fun tune, and "Me o Tojireba Kantan" is one that will stick in your head for a while. I occasionally see this disc on retail sites and on eBay, so be sure to check it out if you see it.

Important tracks:
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" -- DBZ 1st opening theme
- "Tobikkiri no Saikyô tai Saikyô" -- DBZ Movie 5 closing theme
- "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" -- DBZ 1st closing theme

Another very strange DBZ Hit Song Collection CD. This is the second "Characters Special" CD, in which the majority of the tracks are performed by the seiyû involved with the TV series. Three tracks REALLY stand out: Kuririn's "Ichido wa Kekkon Shitai Mambo," in which Kuririn sings about wanting to get married; "Bejiita-sama no O-ryôri Jigoku!!," in which Vegeta sings about cooking; and "Kuchibue no Kimochi," the whistling song from DBZ movie 4 (this version is different; it's Piccolo muttering and screaming in pain as Gohan whistles in the background! VERY FUNNY!). Bulma's song is just "there," offering nothing important. Gohan and Chi-Chi's duet is one of the most obnoxious (and funny at the time time) songs you'll ever hear. Kaiô-sama's track... ehh... must he heard to be believed.

Important tracks:
- "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" -- DBZ 1st opening theme
- "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Pawâ!" -- DBZ 1st closing theme
