Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball Manga:
The Reference Sheet
Research, Annotation, and English Translation: Julian Grybowski
Translation and Information Notes

The left side of this list was translated from this Japanese web page, and is being checked against the chapter titles in the Dragon Ball Kanzenban volumes as they come out.

The information on the left side consists of the Japanese tankôbon titles, release dates, and chapter titles, as well as the issues of Weekly Shônen Jump in which their chapters originally appeared. The right side comprises the (English language) Viz graphic novels' summary captions, first-printing dates, and chapter titles, as well as the monthly comics or Shonen Jump (USA) issues in which their chapters first appeared. This side also contains information about their first uncensored printings (if they were originally censored) and first printings in the smaller Shonen Jump edition. Please note that the Dragon Ball monthly comics ended in March 2003, and as a result, the last four volumes of the series have no corresponding comic book issues.

English-Japanese Correspondence Issues

The English volumes of Dragon Ball are based on the 42-volume tankôbon (book-form) release of the series, with four notable exceptions. First, the series's name is split into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (in Japan, this distinction was only made for the TV show). Second, the first two chapters of Volume 17 (DBZ Volume 1 in the English version), which end the 23rd Tenka-ichi Budôkai, are moved to the end of (the as-yet unpublished) Volume 16. Third, a few title pages from the "Title Page Galleries" have been moved to other volumes, due to page constraints for ad space and such. And finally, the various installments of "Toriyama-san's Ask-Me-Anything Corner," which appeared in the first twelve volumes of the series, have been collected together in volumes 2 and 12 (however, only volume 1's installment was affected before the Shonen Jump edition; it was combined with volume 2's column).

Changes in the Shonen Jump Edition

At the end of 2002, Viz Comics introduced an English language version of Shônen Jump, the famous Japanese manga anthology magazine of which Dragon Ball was a part. Because of this, the Dragon Ball Z monthly comics were discontinued and the series (beginning with the introduction of Trunks) made its debut in the new magazine. In addition to this, both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were added to the new Shonen Jump franchise, and the existing graphic novels (at the time, ten each of DB and DBZ) were reprinted in the new, smaller format (while the original English graphic novels were a hefty 14x21 cm, the new volumes were a mere 12.5x19 cm). However, the visual facelift was not the only change. There are several other modifications worth noting here:

Addition of Akira Toriyama's personal notes from the Japanese volumes. Viz had actually begun to insert these paragraphs, found on the "About the Author" page under his self-portrait, earlier in 2002, but the Shonen Jump format made this addition universal. Their presence is a major plus, as they always contain interesting (and funny) glimpses into Toriyama-sensei's life.

Minor textual changes. Viz took this opportunity to go back and fix a few mistranslations of attack names, putting Gohan's Masen-Kô (Demon Flash) and Tenshinhan's Kikô-Hô (Spirit Cannon) back into DBZ. However, the unspectacular "Light of Death" translation of Piccolo's Makankôsappô (Demonic Spiral Death-Ray) remains in DBZ Volume 1; they probably just couldn't fit the full transliteration into the space provided.

Consolidation of "Toriyama-san's Ask-Me-Anything Corner." For reasons unknown, Viz has now consolidated the installments of Akira Toriyama's question-and-answer column (which originally appeared in the first 12 volumes of DB) into two volumes, 2 and 12. While this doesn't particularly bother me, it will probably upset those concerned with keeping the English volumes as true to the Japanese as possible.

The Japanese Re-release

Recently, Shueisha (the original Japanese publisher of DB) began to put out a new-and-improved version of the manga, with intact color pages, new cover art by Akira Toriyama, and more chapters per volume. This re-release, known as the Kanzenban (Perfect Edition), will have 34 volumes rather than the original 42. I have not yet created a page comparing this version to either the original Japanese tankôbon or the English graphic novels, although the potential exists for me to do so in the future (although I may completely change the format of this section before then).

Notation of Untranslated Terms:
In the titles, item or technique names that I prefer to keep in Japanese or Chinese (but may nevertheless be confusing to many of this site's readers), I will give in italics, followed by the translation in brackets.
For example: Bashô-Sen [Banana-Leaf Fan]; Si Xing Qiu [Four-Star Ball]. Hopefully, this will clear up any potential confusion.
